A proper racing bucket seat and harness are among the biggest upgrades you can make to an E36 track car. They hold you in place, so you can feel what the chassis is doing instead of bracing yourself against the door. But the seat is only as good as what it's mounted to. How you mount it decides how low you sit, how much weight you add, and how solid the whole setup feels.
This guide walks through how to mount a racing seat in a BMW E36: your mounting options, how to measure your seat, choosing a harness setup, and what to check before your first session.
Safety note: a seat and harness are safety equipment. Always follow your seat and harness manufacturers' installation instructions and the rules of your sanctioning body or event organizer. When in doubt, have your installation inspected.
Why seat mounting matters so much in an E36
Three things matter most when you mount a race seat:
- Seating height. A lower seat gives you more helmet clearance under the roof and roll bar, a better view under the mirror, and a lower center of gravity. It also helps you feel the car rotate.
- Weight. Seat mounting hardware is easy to overlook, but it can weigh as much as the seat.
- Rigidity. Any flex in the mount shows up as vague feedback and creaks, and in a crash it's the mount that has to hold you in place.
Your E36 seat mounting options
Most E36 race seat installs use one of two approaches.
1. Floor mount adapter plus seat side mounts
The most common setup on the market stacks parts: a bulky floor-mount adapter on the chassis, then a pair of seat side mounts, then the seat. It works, but every layer adds height, weight and bolted joints. Typical floor-mount solutions weigh roughly 12–18 lbs.
2. A direct bolt-in seat mount kit
Our BMW E36 Racing Seat Floor Mount Kit takes a different approach. It skips the separate floor-mount adapter, so the seat mounts directly through inner and outer seat uprights. Here's why that matters:
- About 15mm lower than typical alternative solutions, for better ergonomics and a lower center of gravity.
- 7.6 lbs total. That's roughly 5–10 lbs lighter than typical floor-mount setups, and more than you'd save by upgrading from a standard fiberglass seat to a carbon/kevlar seat.
- Fewer parts and bolted joints, which makes for a simpler, user-friendly DIY install and a cost-effective kit.
- High-strength carbon steel alloy with a black powder-coat finish. The design is FEA analyzed and real-world tested: we've run this exact setup in our shop E36 race car for over 2 years of hard racing.
It fits both E36 coupe and sedan body styles. You can order it for the driver side, the passenger side or both.
Step 1: Pick a seat that fits you first
Choose the seat for your body and your driving, then mount it. A seat that's too wide lets you slide around, and one that's too narrow is miserable after 20 minutes. Our mount kit works with many popular seat brands, including Recaro, Racetech, Sparco, OMP, Momo, Bride and Sabelt. It also fits most XL-sized race seats and even the Racetech RT1000.
Step 2: Measure your seat's mounting width
The seat mount kit comes in three widths, measured at the seat's mounting points:
- 390–410mm
- 410–430mm
- 430–450mm
Measure across the seat between its side mounting points. If you're not sure, or you haven't bought a seat yet, choose "Not sure – I'll enter my seat make & model" and type your seat's make and model (for example Sparco Sprint or OMP HTE) in the box that appears on the product page. We'll match the right mount before shipping.
Step 3: Decide on your harness setup
The kit lets you mount a 4-point, 5-point or 6-point racing harness. Here are the key points:
- 5-point and 6-point harnesses need a submarine bracket. The kit is offered with or without one. Choose "Yes" if you're running a 5- or 6-point belt.
- Snap-in harness ends are recommended. They make installing and removing belts quicker and cleaner.
- Brand compatibility: the kit is designed to fit many harness brands, including Schroth, Racecraft, Sparco, Racetech, Sabelt, OMP, Takata, Racequip, Willans and Crow.
Plan your shoulder belt angles and anchor points along with your seat height. Mounting the seat lower changes your shoulder harness geometry, so check the harness manufacturer's recommended angles once the seat is in.
Step 4: Install the mounts
The kit includes inner and outer seat uprights, load-distributing washers and the submarine bracket with mounting hardware (if ordered). A general approach:
- Remove the factory seat and clean the mounting area.
- Bolt the uprights to your seat and set the seat position you want. Sit in it with your helmet on to check head clearance and your reach to the wheel and pedals.
- Bolt the assembly into the chassis using the supplied load-distributing washers.
- Install the submarine bracket if you're running a 5- or 6-point harness.
- Torque everything to spec per the hardware and seat manufacturer's guidance.
Step 5: Check it before you drive it
- Sit in the car fully belted with your helmet on. Check head clearance to the roof and any cage or bar.
- Confirm full pedal travel and steering reach. You should be able to rest your wrist on top of the wheel with your shoulders against the seat.
- Push and pull hard on the seat. There should be no movement or creaks.
- Re-check all fasteners after your first session.
Finish the cockpit
Once the seat's in, your lower position puts more emphasis on pedal ergonomics, especially if the carpet is gone. Our BMW E36 floor pan & dead pedal kit levels your heels with the pedals in stripped-interior cars. It fits every E36 body style, including M3 (left-hand-drive cars), and comes in a Caged Version that's about 2" narrower to clear door bars. Order the floor pan with dead pedal and a seat mount with the submarine bracket together and the E36 Track Interior bundle takes $34.95 off automatically in your cart ($444.95 for both).
