If you've pulled the carpet out of your E46 to save weight and make a proper track car, you've probably noticed something the first time you sat in it: your feet don't land where they used to. The factory carpet and padding raise the driver's footwell more than most people realize. Take them out and your heels sit lower and farther from the pedals. That's especially true on the clutch side. That's where a BMW E46 floor pan, also called a heel plate or false floor, comes in.
This guide covers what an E46 floor pan does, who needs one, how to choose between a floor pan by itself and a floor pan with a dead pedal, and what to expect when you install it.
First, a quick clarification: heel plate vs. rust repair panel
Search "E46 floor pan" and you'll find two very different kinds of parts. One is a sheet-metal patch panel that's welded into a car to repair a rusted or damaged floor. The other is a driver's heel plate that sits on top of the footwell in a car with the interior carpet removed.
Our BMW E46 Floor Pan Heel Plate & Dead Pedal Kit is the second kind. It doesn't repair or replace the chassis floor. It's an ergonomic upgrade for stripped-interior track, race and drift cars. If you're fixing rot, you need a body shop panel. If you're building a car for the track and the carpet is gone, keep reading.
Why your feet feel wrong after a carpet delete
BMW designed the E46 pedal box around a footwell with carpet, padding and floor mats in it. Remove all of that and three things happen:
- Your heels drop. Your foot has to travel farther to reach and fully press each pedal, especially the clutch.
- You work harder on every input. More foot and ankle motion adds up over a long session and slows down quick inputs like heel-toe downshifts.
- The floor gets hot and slippery. Bare floor near the transmission tunnel gets warm, and bare painted metal or seam sealer isn't grippy, especially with wet or dirty shoes.
None of this matters on a lap of the parking lot. Over a 25-minute stint or a full endurance stint, it absolutely does.
What an E46 floor pan heel plate does
A heel plate gives your driving foot a flat, firm platform at the right height. Here's what our E46 floor pan is designed to do:
- Levels your feet to an ergonomic position. It brings your heels up to where the pedals expect them, cutting the motion needed to press each pedal. That reduces driver fatigue and helps tighten up your inputs.
- Isolates your feet from the hot transmission tunnel for better comfort in a stripped car.
- Keeps your feet planted. The surface is covered in anti-slip grip tape, so your feet don't slide around even in rainy or wet conditions.
- Stays stiff and light. Dimpled skins and a ribbed structure give it high stiffness, so it doesn't flex when you plant a foot to climb out of the car. The floor pan weighs about 4 lbs.
- Looks finished. A stripped interior can look half-done. A properly fitted heel plate gives the footwell a clean, purposeful look.
Floor pan only, or floor pan + dead pedal?
The E46 kit comes in two versions: Floor Pan Only and Floor Pan + Dead Pedal.
A dead pedal is a fixed foot rest to the left of the clutch. It gives your left foot somewhere solid to brace between shifts and through long, high-load corners. When you brace against a dead pedal instead of the floor, the seat or the clutch, your body stays more stable in the seat and your left leg works less. On a stripped car, the factory foot rest area usually isn't as useful without the carpet, so most track builds benefit from adding one.
If you already have a dead pedal you like, or you're building a car with a non-standard pedal setup, the floor pan by itself may be all you need. If you're running a different chassis or just want a foot rest, our universal race dead pedal foot rest (9" tall x 2.75" wide, mounting hardware included) works in any car, truck or boat.
E46 fitment
The E46 floor pan fits every BMW E46 chassis and body style:
- Sedan, coupe, convertible, touring and hatchback
- E46 M3
- Spec E46 builds
It fits the driver's side front footwell of left-hand-drive cars and is designed for cars with the floor mats and interior carpet removed. It also fits caged cars. If you have unusual seat mounting or a modified pedal box, email us at info@elianmotorsport.com before you order and we'll help you confirm fit.
What's in the box
- Floor panel with anti-slip tape
- Dead pedal (if ordered)
- All mounting hardware: M5 rivet nuts and M5 socket head cap screws for the floor pan and the dead pedal
Installation
These steps follow our official E36/E46 floor pan installation instructions. Download the installation instructions (PDF).
Included: all mounting hardware, meaning M5 rivet nuts and M5 socket head cap screws for both the floor pan and the dead pedal.
What you'll need: a permanent marker or center punch, a drill with a 5/16" bit (an "N" bit or a 7.6–7.8mm bit also works), and a rivet nut installation tool with an M5 mandrel.
Floor pan
- With the carpet removed, set the floor pan in the driver's footwell and push it forward up to the accelerator pedal.
- Use a permanent marker or center punch to transfer the hole positions from the floor pan onto the floor of the car.
- Remove the floor pan.
- Drill out the 4 marked locations to 5/16" ("N" or 7.6–7.8mm holes are also fine).
- Use the rivet nut tool with an M5 mandrel to install and form the supplied M5 rivet nuts in the holes. Alternatively, you can source M5 lock nuts and washers to use instead of the rivet nuts, but installing and removing the floor pan then becomes a two-person job.
- Reinstall the floor pan and bolt it down with the supplied M5 socket head cap screws.
Dead pedal
- Place the dead pedal on the floor pan and move it around until it sits where it feels right to you. The forward/back position and the spacing to the clutch pedal vary from driver to driver.
- Use a permanent marker or center punch to transfer the hole positions from the dead pedal onto the floor pan.
- Remove the floor pan from the car.
- Drill out the 4 marked locations to 5/16" ("N" or 7.6–7.8mm holes are also fine).
- Use the rivet nut tool with an M5 mandrel to form the supplied M5 rivet nuts in the holes. Alternatively, you can source M5 lock nuts and washers to use instead, but installing and removing the dead pedal then takes two tools (for example, a socket driver and a wrench).
- Bolt the dead pedal to the floor pan, then install the floor pan back in the car. That's it.
Other E46 parts for a track build
If you're building out an E46 for the track, the floor pan pairs well with other parts made for the chassis:
- BMW E46 hood vent louver kit: a 2-piece vent kit (about 8" x 13" each) for coupe and sedan, M3 and non-M. It's designed to lower engine operating temperatures and reduce front lift. Buy it with the floor pan + dead pedal and the E46 Track bundle takes $34.95 off automatically in your cart ($424.95 for both).
- Universal front fender vents: E46 M3 is one of the common applications. They're designed to reduce the lift and drag generated at the front tires.
- M4 GT3-inspired rear window vents: for E46 M3 builds running a polycarbonate rear window, to pull hot air out of the cabin.
Running a different chassis?
We make the same style of floor pan heel plate and dead pedal kit for other BMWs:
- BMW E36 floor pan & dead pedal kit: fits every E36 body style including M3 (left-hand drive), with a Caged Version that's about 2" narrower to clear door bars. It also fits S54-swapped E36 cars with E46 electronic accelerator pedals.
- BMW E9X floor pan & dead pedal kit: fits the E90, E91, E92, E93 and M3 (left-hand drive), with spacers included.
